My Students

I work at an inclusive school in Los Angeles, CA that serves all students, no matter what their needs are. We have students that live all over the city and travel far and wide to be a part of our community. Students at my school engage in service learning projects which connect them with the community, build their sense of confidence and social responsibility while addressing district standards. With an emphasis on developing character, technology skills, and a deep understanding of the world, my school prepares students to be leaders.

My Project

There are many reasons why flexible seating would help the students in my classroom Students learn best when they have some control over their environment. Having flexible seating including bouncy chairs, resistance bands for traditional chairs, rocking chairs, beanbag chairs, stack stools, and balance balls would allow the students to choose where they want to work and with whom. It also allows them to change their location and position as needed. Students can move, which will help decrease distractions and disruptions. If my students are comfortable, they will be more calm, focused, and productive. With flexible seating, students can bounce, lean, twist, kick, fidget, wobble, roll, stand, kneel, and sit to suit their needs. Traditional desks can make students territorial or possessive over their space and supplies. Flexible seating encourages the students to share space and supplies. Lastly, flexible seating stimulates students’ sense of touch. This type of stimulation can help children focus and process information. Sensory input is especially helpful for students with ADD, ADHD, and ASD.
