Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Almost all of my students come from underprivileged backgrounds. The total minority enrollment is 95%, and the official number of students who are economically disadvantaged is 81% (underestimate.) Despite being keenly aware of the daunting odds facing them, my students show up and work hard to make their dreams come true. It is humbling to see kids come to school with focus and determination knowing some of them are living in shelters, foster homes, and other incredibly difficult circumstances. They are by and large good kids- well-behaved, kind, thoughtful, intelligent, creative, responsible- each with gifts that can benefit society.

I have a PhD in microbiology and immunology and many years of experience in research.

I try to enrich the students not just on a scientific level but culturally, psychologically, and even spiritually as well. Therefore, I am holistic in my approach, and strive to create an atmosphere of learning- infused with beauty, safety and healing. All students are encouraged to have self-love, connection, dreams, and the skills to achieve them- all in the Spirit of service and gratitude.

My Project

Our Special Education department has a computer room set up for our teachers to work, and mostly to write IEP's for our students. We all work here for hours every week and currently, there are only a few metal foldup chairs we share. The chairs are old and on their last leg. It can be very difficult to spend hours doing our work without ending up with a sore back and legs. Please help our department, in addition to teaching 5 classes Teachers also handle all aspects of offering support to our Special Ed Students.
