My Students

Africa, the Caribbean, Louisiana, New England, Canada, Europe, Tahiti...These are some of the world cultures that are being opened to students in our French classes. As we study their language, we study their history, their present and have an eye on their future through finding authentic resources that bring their culture and language to our classroom.

As they prepare for life after high school in an ever-shrinking world, my students are choosing to expand their minds through learning a second language and experience the cultures of those who speak it.

They are eager to drink it all in, and as they do, they learn to understand not only how other peoples live and think, they are better able to understand their own culture and language.

My Project

Learning to speak and understand French as a second language in Utah is not an easy thing. With the Internet, French reading and some listening resources are available, but speaking French - and especially conversing in French - is limited to the classroom / homework and is somewhat contrived. Conversations last a few short minutes and are mostly with other students. These last few years, with even more limited interaction, have made it even harder. Students need and want to be able to understand and engage in real conversations with real French speakers! Students preparing for the AP exam or even for that long-awaited trip to France crave more practice speaking with, and understanding, real native French speakers.

What a thrill for students to be able to say "I can have a real conversation with a real French-speaker and understand and be understood!" This project will make that happen for my French 3, 4 and AP students - and not just once, but on 4 separate occasions between now and the end of the school year.

TalkAbroad will connect my students with authentic French speakers from throughout the francophone community for 10 minutes per session. They work specifically with high schools to create a safe environment where students and vetted native speakers can talk about subjects provided by me as the teacher. The conversations are recorded and sent to me, allowing me to give feedback, as well as to be an extra layer of security.

Three years ago, I attended a workshop at a Utah Foreign Language Association conference, where the presenters raved about their experience with TalkAbroad. I have been dreaming about the opportunity ever since. I will be so grateful to be able to share it with my students.
