This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

CES is a Vanguard Magnet Campus located in the historic Eastend neighborhood that meets the needs and serves students who have been identified as gifted and talented in ability, creativity, or leadership. It has a population of 352 students, 86% are economically disadvantaged and 61% are English learners. We support our students with a high-quality education and technology-enriched classrooms so they can be well-rounded learners. This learning consists of our many after-school clubs and activities. One of these clubs is the CES Cycling Club.

The CES Cycling Club encourages personal growth, wellness, and fitness through cycling.

The goal of the club is to foster a love of cycling and exploration. In the beginning, most of the students in the club do not or have not ridden a bicycle for years, and through practice, training, and education they are completing 9 mile rides safely on the Houston roads and trails thus, instilling a sense of exploration and a higher level of fitness and well being.

We foster creativity by participating in the Orange Show Art Bike Parade, where students design and decorate their bikes. Our theme last year was "Anything in the sky!" and students colored, taped, glued, painted, and zip-tied to make their design a reality. We organized a school-wide and community ride and together ride 12 miles to and from the parade. This past year, we won the "It's Alive Trophy" for our amazing art bike projects.

Here at CES, we are a strong community but we need more support to make our cycling club even better and allow more students to experience new things. We want to expand our group by adding more bikes and need extra materials such as tubes, bottle cages, and bags.
