Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are tactile learners who need the satisfaction of creating things with their hands. They enjoy the idea of making things, and their curiosity guides them in their desire of wanting to know how things around them are made, how they work, and how they can fix them.

Most of my students come from an industrial area of Brooklyn, and will likely find jobs that require specific, industrial skills.

My goal is to help them explore these skills earlier on in their lives so they can enjoy the experience of learning.

My Project

A couple of years ago our school started offering elective classes in the morning. This is a time for students to attend classes that expand on the learning they do through out the day with courses that deal with social justice, robotics, etc. I started a Ceramics elective, aimed towards students who needed an hour in the day just to sit back, relax, and make objects out of clay, either free form or by using a wheel.

The Ceramics elective has been a huge success, and students have mentioned how much the time they spend in the studio helps them relax and concentrate for the rest of the day.

But with the popularity comes a caveat. I only have a limited amount of funding for all of my classes, which includes 9th Grade Visual Arts as well. I have been able to reuse old clay and use personal funds to acquire glaze, but that has proven to be a difficult task. with your donations, I will be able to get professional quality clay and glazes for my students who really enjoy the class.
