Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

On a typical day in my classroom my students will be working on any number of projects. We have class assignments to work on every single day but also contest entries, special projects, and school decorations to create. My classroom is a busy place.

My students come from low socioeconomic households.

Our school is 95% free or reduced lunch. We have an Art Magnet program at our school that requires an audition to enroll. Many of my students come to school early so that they can work on their classwork or work on special projects. During this time I let them try out new materials or propose ideas for new projects. My students are never satisfied with good enough. They are always trying to learn new techniques that will improve their skills. For many of my students art is the one place where they can excel and make their voice heard. The work that my students create has been recognized locally and nationally. I want my students to be proud of the work that they produce. By entering contests and exhibitions, my students have a chance to be recognized for their hard work and creativity.

My Project

These materials will allow my students to have a "real" ceramics experience. The process that most people associate with ceramics is pottery thrown on the potter's wheel. Art teachers know that there are many aspects of ceramics to learn about before getting to something as sophisticated as the potter's wheel.

The reason that most teachers are unable to use this wonderful teaching tool is the high cost of purchasing the equipment.

I believe that my students will aspire to work with the potter's wheel and they will work harder to get to that point. Along with the pottery wheels I am requesting clay and decorating wheels so that my students can decorate their works. This project will give my students the opportunity to learn about all aspects of ceramics.
