My Students

My students come from refugee camps all over the world - Africa, Asia and the Middle East. Our school is a ELL magnet for newcomer refugee students with over 50 languages spoken. The students love to work with clay and visual art is a natural way for them to communicate without words.

My students are new to the United States.

Many have suffered severe trauma and witnessed unspeakable violence in their war torn native countries. They are beginning the process of adapting to a new way of life, climate, language and school itself since many come from refugee camps with no formal education. I teach visual art to almost 1000 students ranging in age from 4 years old to 14 years old. We are an urban school in a high poverty population.The students love visual art and working with their hands. The arts give the students a voice and method of communicating without the barriers of language.

My Project

I am requesting resources to teach an after school ceramics club. My students will have the opportunity to create ceramic sculptures, learn the techniques of hand building with clay, and learn about the world of ceramics. Each student will complete 4 or more ceramic artworks. The students will discover the world of fine art, improve their art skills and express themselves in one of the oldest art mediums, clay. Forming clay with your hands is therapeutic. This experience can awaken a lifelong interest in art, and success in the arts helps all students gain self confidence. Interest in the arts helps students stay in school and out of trouble.

Support for the Ceramics Club will make an impact on the lives of my students.

This club will give my students an avenue to a healthy creative, engaging activity that they do not have the resources to discover on their own. This will impact the whole school community and has potential to lead to further arts endeavors.
