This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

These materials support the GOFUNDME campaign of the purchase of a SKUTT KILN, creating a working ceramic studio for trauma survivors in a small HS where students are trying to graduate. In the words of the great ceramic artist and educator, Karen Karnes, "The answer to all high school problems is clay."

These students will experience clay for the first time, exploring the amazing feelings of relaxation, from anxiety to focus, and finding a sense of purpose and direction.

How the coolness of the clay warms to the touch. The sense of creativity, the learning to "listen to the clay", the process of slowing down and becoming patient, seeing one's aesthetic develop and evolve, and the satisfaction of finishing a piece.

Students will explore coils, slabs, pinch pots, make name plates, vessels, and a bust, draw into damp clay or sgraffito, glazing and firing seeing the transformation of clay into a ceramic form.

Clay vessels and tiny funerary objects date back to ancient China, Greece, Latin America, and Africa where the earliest forms have been found. These students will discover these connections, making objects that resonate and have meaning in their own time.
