My Students

My kindergarteners are a diverse group of ELL students. They all share a strong desire to learn. Many of them come from low income families who struggle to make ends meet. While it is a poor area of the Bronx the kids are so enthusiastic!! They know when they walk through the doors of our school that they are cared for. Many come in hungry, tired and sometimes sad and upset. It is not an easy task developing the language and skills of English language learners. They often get frustrated and upset when they struggle to complete tasks.

With the support of a passionate teacher and caring peers they know that giving up is never an option in our kindergarten classroom!!

My Project

One area my students struggle the most with is listening and speaking. I know first hand how challenging it is to try to overcome learning a new language and having the confidence to speak to native peers. I'm requesting an easel with storage for the classroom center materials which allow students easy access to the materials they need. Students will be able to read stories or practice alphabet sounds with their peers.

In my classroom, we practice listening and speaking daily using cooperative learning strategies.

The addition of leveled books and center materials geared toward English language learners would give my students a much needed boost of practice in the areas of listening and speaking. Students who are confident in their listening and speaking abilities will be ready to face the challenges of higher education and the workplace.
