Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our classroom consists of 20 energetic, kind, and capable 3rd graders who face unique challenges due to struggles in their Kensington neighborhood, the inequitable funding of Philadelphia Public Schools, and the ramifications of two years of Covid. It is composed of 100% students of color; almost half are multilingual, and approximately 30% receive special education services.

They are passionate about learning and arrive each day excited to be there.

As a class, they are about making a difference in the world and speaking out against injustice. Yet, their interests range; the class has avid readers, artists, athletes, scientists, mathematicians, and even an aspiring comedian! They are funny, sincere, and full of zest for life! The only thing at school slowing these students down on their meteoric rise is access to adequate learning materials.

100% of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, and we often find ourselves short on things like pencils, paper, books, and the like. With the right resources, these students are future leaders and change-makers!

My Project

Now that the computers have arrived, we need headphones and other center tools to enhance our math centers. People contributed more money last time than the computer project took, and I would like to use those funds to make the most of centers in our classroom. My partner teacher and I also need new pencil sharpeners and so that is included as well. All of these classroom tools will further learning for the students and help make the best use of time in the classroom. I will be contributing to the project myself as well, I just don't want the donated funds sitting there when there is a need for supplies.
