My Students

After watching a biography about Dr. Ben Carson, the director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, I was determined to provide my students with an opportunity to explore the science of cells and hopefully spark in them a desire to pursue a scientific field.

My students are a wonderful group of young people who come from many different cultures and backgrounds.

They are curious about how things work and want to learn more about science. We have over 50% of our student in the free/reduced lunch program, but what we lack in means we make up for in hard work and determination to learn.

My Project

My students will use the microscope slides to investigate different types of cells and explore the differences between plant and animal cells. The students will hone their non-fiction reading skills as the read the Investigating Cells books. Armed with this knowledge, my students will be able to participate in a hands-on exploration using the DNA extraction and isolation kit.

It is so important that my students have the opportunity for that "ah-ha" moment that comes when they get the chance to do explorations in science.

I want to open up the microscopic world to my students. These activities are so engaging for students, and sixth grade is the perfect time to hook my students and inspire them to set their goals high.
