Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have 23 energetic fourth graders in my New York City classroom. Many of the children come from low-economic households, but they have big dreams. They understand the importance of a good education. Most of the students attend after-school programs as well, so they spend the majority of their day in school.

My students work both in homogeneous groups and in heterogeneous groups in order to accomplish their daily learning targets.

We not only focus our academic goals, but on our social-emotional goals as well. We are involved with the Leader in Me program and practice our 7 Habits of Happy Kids. We understand that in order to be successful in school, we must always try our best. We motivate each other and work as a team.

My Project

It is important for children to celebrate not only their own cultures but different cultures was well. The more we learn about diverse cultures, the more well rounded we become. Living in New York City, we see people from all over the world, we eat foods from different cultures and we sing and dance to a variety of music. It is not only vital to be exposed to cultures but to actually learn about them so we can get a better understanding.

Now it's the perfect time for fourth graders to read more books with culturally diverse characters.

Some of the books I requested the children will be able to relate to by making self-to-text connections. Some of the other books are intended to teach them about cultures they may not necessarily have first hand experience with.

We also request multicultural markers and coloring pencils so that we can color our drawings of people with the shades that match all the beautiful skin colors of the students in our class and the characters in our books. It is a quick and easy way to celebrate us!
