My Project

It is nearly the end of the academic year, and my students have worked tirelessly to complete their courses and recover credits while working full-time jobs and caring for their children. They are a remarkable group of humans who exemplify resilience and strength by showing up for themselves and others.

Classroom snacks are the least we can offer our students in repayment for their persistence and dedication to education.

They continue to meet high academic expectations by putting in the time and effort necessary to meet skill and content mastery.

Nearly all students manage full-time jobs while caring for their children and others (e.g., siblings, parents, and grandparents) in their homes. I have yet to hear any of them complain. They show up to school as often as possible and produce their very best work. They are open to instructional feedback and support one another in mastering the skills and content introduced in class.

Moreover, my students share a range of identities that are too often seen as deficits but are, in fact, strengths that galvanize them towards success. They are all mothers, the majority are immigrant-oriented, and all identify as non-binary and/or cisgender youth. Collectively, they identify as "resilient, empowered scholars" to change negative views of teen mothers as deviant or misguided, disadvantaged youth.

Stepping up to do the work necessary for changing the limited views surrounding their diverse identities takes time and hard work. They have consistently put forth the energy needed to change the hearts and minds of those surrounding them. Their efforts go above and beyond what is required for graduation. They are each deserving of only the best that our educational system offers.
