Connections are key to our learning community. I respect each child for who they are and I want my students to feel visible and valued. My hope is for my students to see themselves as individuals yet also see the connections they share as they themselves reflected in the books they read and the rewards they choose.
The incentives on our rewards cart, like stuffed animals, sketch books, and scented markers, are thoughtfully selected to meet the needs and wants of my learners to encourage them to be the best they can be.
Books such as, A Place to Land: Martin Luther King Jr. and the Speech That Inspired a Nation and Hello, Opportunity: The Story of Our Friend on Mars, encourage my students to affirm and value their own identities as well as those of others. As readers, they identify with the characters they meet in the books they read which is why an inclusive library is so crucial! Books can be windows for my readers to see through to the outside world as well as a reflection of their own identity.
My students are all in the same grade, but they are socially and racially diverse. My hope is for all my students to have what they need to succeed and feel equity in our fourth-grade classroom. I want my students to have an equitable educational experience. One way to support all learners is by having rewards available for my students to celebrate successes and accomplishments in our learning community.
