A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The 26 third graders in my classroom care about each other and work hard to express their citizenship and respect for each other. I call them my heroes because they work hard to overcome any adversity that threatens our community of learners. We gather daily for morning meetings. During this time, we share about ourselves, our lives, and our hopes and dreams.
My students amaze me every day with their insight, their compassion, and their empathy for their classmates.
We are a diverse community and enjoy celebrating our differences. This is a great group of readers who are interested in the world around them and beyond.
My Project
I have a classroom full of readers! The students are continual "trading" books. The community in which we live is becoming increasingly diverse, and our classroom library lacks the materials that acknowledge and celebrate the differences in our community. We have students from several cultures and races, from blended families, with identity struggles, and many more things that make us different.
I would like to provide books that my students can relate to and learn from.
My students need books that have characters with similar life situations. We often talk about role models that "look like" them. My students also need books that provide positive images of diversity in communities.
Books take us to places that we may never be able to visit. Books often help us to understand how someone who is different from us can also be the same. Students not only need books that celebrate their own self imagines, but they also need books that help them to celebrate those who are different.
