Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school is a Spanish Dual language school that serves 73% Latino and 22% Asian students. About 34.1% are English Learners (ELs), 48.1% are English Only or Initially Fluent in English (IFEPs), and 38% participate in the Two-Way Immersion Spanish Dual Language Program. Through our multiple language programs options, we foster students’ sense of belonging and improve social-emotional and academic skills.

We work hard so that our students, despite their language classifications, can achieve their highest academic potential and become biliterate and socio-culturally competent.

My Project

My project is based on developing ongoing school and community engagement. By implementing monthly family workshops, the community and staff will share the responsibility for student learning and multicultural appreciation. An initial survey will identify parents' perceptions about their active involvement in the school. Our goal is to develop parent leaders by inviting them to engage as active facilitators.

This project will bridge the cultural assets that families possess and bring them into the school setting.

For the month of October, the theme is Honoring our Ancestors. Our sessions will consist of activities related to the arts, literacy, mathematics, history, and cooking. As families come in, a photo will be taken for a keepsake.

In the literature workshop, students will learn about Dia de los muertos, an Aztec and Pre-Columbian tradition and the life of Jose Posada, the creator of calaveras (skull) drawings.

In the craft workshops, parents will use the crepe paper to show our students how to design "papel picado" and special flowers to decorate their "ofrendas" or altars. The Day of the Dead Crafts book will demonstrate how to decorate unique memorials by using shoe boxes, paints, sequins, and glue sticks to decorate their memorials. Using The Day of the Dead Drawing Book, students will draw festive Mexican skeleton art.

Students will also participate in a cooking demonstration taught by our parent bakers. The traditional recipe "pan muerto" will be passed down to the children. They will wear aprons and chef hats and use the cooking utensils to bring to life a bread that will entice the dead to a sweet treat. Students will learn about ingredients, cooking procedures, measurement, and recipe writing.

At the end of the school year, we will retake the initial survey and measure the parent involvement growth based on our monthly workshops.
