Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My school is a PK-6th neighborhood school in Cincinnati. My school is a Title I school, with 100% of the students receiving free or reduced-price lunch.

My students encounter many challenges in and outside of school, but they are hardworking and full of joy!

My students love to learn about real people and put their hands on actual books.

The school has a Vision 2020 Global Environmental Literacy (GEL) plan that integrates five components: Global Citizenship, Environmental Literacy, Health and Wellness, Service Learning, and Digital Literacy. This project will add to their Global Citizenship learning.

My Project

We are celebrating Black History Month and this year our focus is on HBCUs. Our staff would like for all of the students to learn the importance and richness of HBCUs. HBCUs are a huge part of the African American school culture. Each grade level has been assigned an HBCU. The grades will decorate their classroom doors and hallways to represent their HBCU. Throughout the month students will learn steps in PE, drum beats in music, the history of HBCUs, why they exist, and participate in activities around HBCUs.

I am excited to show our students early on the importance of HBCUs.

As part of our celebration our staff would like to provide each child a white t-shirt to decorate with their future alma mater. They will decorate their shirt with the HBCUs mascot, facts, and why they would like to attend this school.

For Black History Month this year, our focus in on HBCUs. The vinyl that I am requesting will allow students to have a hands-on approach and inspire their curiosity about higher education.
