My Project

My classroom is filled with 18 high-energy, creative, and curious scholars. Despite the pandemic, they love to share their items and be near one another. They love story read aloud’s and always enjoy discussing the book. I would like to give my scholars a diverse library to help them see characters just like themselves and to learn about others. Help to support diversity in the classroom with a diverse library.

Specifically, in the books that have been provided by the school and that I’ve been able to acquire, the majority of characters are white. I’m looking to diversify my library by purchasing books that feature children of color so that all my scholars can see themselves represented in the books that are read.

For most of my scholars, English is a second language, and it would be a joy for them to have literature in both English and Spanish to teach their classmates how to pronounce and translate a Spanish book. Books with heroes that look like them and stories whereas heroes don’t look like them will help them appreciate their own identity and the identity of other people. My scholars need to see Black, Spanish, boy, and girl heroes. Heroes with disabilities, different types of settings urban and rural areas.

We are also in dire need of a color printer and laminating sheets. These items will help me to employ reading and math center activities in the classroom. “Color printed materials offer many benefits in teaching students—they better capture attention and deliver an enhanced learning experience.”
