Celebrating Diversity with Books in Different Languages

Help me give my students the gift of books in their home languages. Telugu, Tamil, Urdu, and Chinese are the top four languages that are spoken by our students, and we want to celebrate their culture!

My Students

Over the last couple of years, Frisco ISD has seen an increase of students who come from a wide variety of different cultures. At our campus we have over 15 different languages spoken by our families.

We are proud of our diversity, and we want to make our students feel more connected to their home language as much as possible.

As a Language Coach, I get the opportunity to work with all grade levels at my school. The students I get to work alongside of are English Language Learners (ELLs). They speak different languages at home, and are learning to read and write in those home languages in addition to English.

Our ELLs are hard workers, dedicated to their education, and are eager to learn as much as possible about their culture and where their families come from. We are proud to serve them!

My Project

Our students' diversity is very important to us at my campus. We love celebrating each other and our differences. Our school library is packed with English books, but we lack books in other languages. I am requesting books in their my students' languages which include Telugu, Tamil, Urdu, and Chinese.

When more than half of our 700 student population speaks, reads, and writes in a different language, it seems odd that we do not offer books in their home language for them to read.

These books will engage our students on a new level, and allow them to enjoy their home culture while at school. We are so excited to share these books with our students, and show them that their home language is important to us!
