Celebrating Diversity Through Art & Literature

My students need craft materials, such as wiggle eyes and craft sticks, along with children's literature for activities to develop acceptance, tolerance, and awareness of cultural diversity.

My Students

How can you explain to a child that he or she is different from other students, yet very alike? How can you explain the background of holidays, such as Martin Luther King Jr. Day and the Lunar New Year? Explaining them might be difficult, but literature and art can make it easier.

I have 25 wonderfully diverse kindergarteners who are playful, vibrant, and energetic.

They come from different social economic backgrounds and ethnicities. Regardless of their different backgrounds, they share one core value for education - curiosity. They enjoy learning just about everything!

My Project

Books have a unique way of explaining challenging concepts through the language of story telling. Art allows us to express our emotions and deep thoughts that words cannot. My students love literature and art, and what a great way to combine both to teach and celebrate cultural diversity. I love incorporating arts and crafts in nearly every subject matter, as I see the benefits of it engaging students in learning. I want to continue this method of instruction, but with the budget cuts, my school doesn't have the art supplies that once existed, and I don't want to short change my students in art. I turn to you to help us obtain books (stories about holidays, leaders, cultures, and people) and craft materials (collage accessories, skin color people cut-outs, etc.) that will continue our studies in multicultural awareness and individual uniqueness: acceptance and tolerance.

We hope you can help us through your generosity.

Your donations will get the materials to enrich our classroom as we explore what it means to be different, yet alike in so many ways.
