My Project

I teach an amazing group of second graders who are curious, creative, and eager to learn. My students come from diverse backgrounds, and they love exploring topics that celebrate culture, history, and creativity. With Black History Month approaching, I want to give my students the opportunity to dive deeper into the incredible contributions of African Americans, especially in the arts.

This project will help us study Jacob Lawrence, an iconic artist known for using bold colors and shapes to tell powerful stories about the African American experience.

The materials I’m requesting—books about Jacob Lawrence and his artwork, along with art supplies—will allow my students to explore his life and work in a meaningful way. They’ll learn about storytelling through art and create their own vibrant pieces inspired by his style.

These resources will make a big difference because they’ll provide students with the tools to connect history, art, and their own creativity. The books will expand our classroom library, offering opportunities to read about Lawrence and other inspiring Black figures. The art supplies will bring their learning to life as they apply what they’ve learned to hands-on projects.

My students are special because they’re not just learning—they’re discovering their voices and understanding how they fit into the larger world. Celebrating Black History Month with a focus on art helps them see how their stories, cultures, and creativity matter. This project will empower them to honor history while expressing their own unique perspectives.
