My Students

Our school is a Title l and high poverty school where every student receives free breakfast and lunch. My class is also an inclusion class full of funny, caring and adorable children who just want to learn and be like everyone else. The parents of our students want their children to succeed, but they, themselves, are very limited in the help they give to make this happen for their child.

My classroom needs books for our class library about African Americans and how they helped to make our country the grand country it is today.

February is Black History month and these would be great for us to use not only during the entire school year, but especially during the month of February. I would like for us to be able to spotlight a different person or event each day in February so for my class, which is 82% African American and 18% Caucasian, can see what an enormous impact African Americans have had on our country through the years and continuing today.

My Project

My classroom is madeup of 82% African Americans and 18% Caucasian. We are coming up on Black History Month in February and I want great literature and nonfiction to share with my class during this month and all through the school year that celebrates African Americans. This is very important for all of my students, no matter their culture or ethnicity.

I want my students to learn how important African Americans were, not only in the history of our country, but also how important they continue to be in all walks of life in our world.

We will soar the skies with the Tuskegee airmen of WWII, walk the Underground Railroad with Harriet Tubman and skat with Louie Armstrong on trumpet.
