My Students

I teach English as a New Language (formerly English as a Second Language) in a public elementary school in Brooklyn.

My students come from immigrant families and diverse backgrounds.

They are mostly beginning readers and writers. They are very curious, and they love to learn!

My Project

I am an ESL teacher in a public school in Brooklyn. I work with students in the early childhood grades. About 60% of the student population at my school are Asians. I selected these books to help diversify the bookshelves in our kindergarten classrooms.

Through stories that celebrate Asian culture and beauty and normalize the Asian American experience, we can build empathy and combat racism.

Books play an important role in identity development. It is important for our Asian students to be able to see themselves in books in our classroom libraries. These books will also allow students of other ethnicities to learn about Asian culture.
