This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a group of active, curious Pre-Kindergarteners whose eagerness to learn continually inspires my teaching. Our school is a Title I school: the majority of the students’ families are low income and nearly all qualify to receive free or reduced price lunch. Many students are first-generation United Stares citizens, learning English for the first time.

Despite being residents of a large, diverse urban city, they rarely venture outside of their neighborhood.

Parents have little time or means to provide enrichment opportunities outside of school. This has become even more difficult as the COVID-19 virus keeps our school shuttered and students out of class. Families do their best to keep up with school news and projects, but often lack the resources to participate effectively in remote learning

My Project

Pre-Kindergarten is designed to promote social and emotional learning. It’s been quite a challenge continuing in this time of social distance. I knew I would (and could) adapt quickly, but I worried about the students in my class: how could remote learning ever work for pre-kindergarteners? I’m please to say, with the help of some very cooperative parents, my students have been able to participate and engage with the help of videoconferences and sharing apps.

Their eagerness and positive attitude keep me going strong.

I think they deserve a really great moving up to kindergarten gift... don’t you? I’m asking for donations to purchase fun, educational school supply gifts for the end of the school year.
