My Students

A Native American proverb states, "We do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children" which is a common quote in environmental science. My goal is to use a school garden to instill this ideology in my students.

My students are fantastic!

They are interested in learning more about the environment and how they impact it. Our school is in an urban area in Pennsylvania and my students have limited access to the natural world. It becomes difficult at times for them to make real life connections to things like land use when many of them do not have their own backyards.

My Project

I am asking for materials that are necessary to maintain a school garden. My project will have students plan, create, and maintain a garden on school grounds. The garden will consist of only native plants to the region and have flowering plants, shrubs, and vegetables. I will incorporate this garden into all aspects of the Environmental Science curriculum according to PA state standards. More importantly, it will give students hands on experience in a natural world setting and a sense of accomplishment that comes from planting and tending to the the growth of living things. A larger goal of this project is to create an outdoor classroom setting open to all students in the school.

By donating to this project, you will have a chance to provide a hands on learning opportunity that cannot be mimicked in the classroom.

While there is wonderful technology to simulate the growth of plants based on different variables, there is no substitute for the real thing. My students will have the opportunity to realize the fruits of their labor and they will see first hand how nature responds to their interactions. This is the goal of my course.
