A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
My students are hardworking, but there is more beneath the surface! They have a drive to be productive members of society and not easily corrupted by today's social peer pressure. Twenty-four of my 9th grade Physical Science students have banned together to help fight the epidemic of "vaping" in schools. They are ambitious, intelligent, caring students who want the all students of their community to transition into successful 21st century learners. Through this STEM project they can meet this goal and help shape the health and well being of fellow students from around the world.
The Physical Science class at CCHS would like to work as unit teams, consisting of six members on each team, to address the real-world problem of vaping in our schools. They will obtain college ready skills through brainstorming, research, reverse engineering, construction, testing, and evaluation of the design process by developing a prototype device that detects for the presence of one of the two most common components that deliver e-cigarette vapor: propylene glycol or glycerin. The device will detect traces of one or both of these main components on students hand or breathe, therefore allowing students to get help for their addiction and reduce vaping within the school.
In Their Own Words
Our STEM projects goal is be at the forefront of ending the epidemic of vaping in schools." According to CNN April, 2018, the United States Surgeon General cited "a nine-hundred percent increase in teens usage of e-cigarettes from 2011 to 2015." We would like to help students overcome their addiction and to destroy the stigma that "vaping is cool!" and "vaping will make you a better student!". Vaping is a major heath risk and can be worse for you than we even know right now and science has little evidence of long term effects. Smoking and vaping can be the gateway to heavier drugs. As a team, we would like to develop a tester that will detect Propylene Glycol or Glycerin on a students breath or hands. Deterring vaping in school is not only a health benefit but will also allow the students who are doing it an opportunity to get help for their addiction.
As a dedicated team of students, diligently working on this project, we would like to be at the forefront on leading the mission of ending this vaping epidemic in schools-Learning Today, Leading Tomorrow. Our school's mission has taught us to finish something after you commit to starting it and that is what we plan on doing! Self-esteem, self-motivation, and responsibility including caring for others are traits that our school teaches us and that our team will take to heart.
This project is important to us because students do not need to be wasting their health and money on vape at such a young age. Students suspended can fall behind on work and begin to fail classes which can stop them from feeling successful. This vicious cycle ceases to stop which causes the cycle to start again and affecting many more students. This will in turn effect the job and housing markets of the future. The cities rely on the people, who rely on their children. Please help us stop this vicious cycle. We feel that education, including health education, is a cooperative effort between home, school and the community.
