Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Many students at My High School have recently arrived in the United States during their high school career. Because of their circumstances, they often have to walk to school in the cold and dark to make their 7:35 am first block class. Too often, I have seen students walking in thin hoodies that do not keep them warm during the 45-minute walk. Other students prefer not to come to school if it's too cold. We are actively looking for ways to avoid these barriers to their education, and warming stations are an effective strategy.

While our students get reduced breakfast and lunch, a warming station is a spot they can go to and find the resources they need to make it through the winter.

The CCHS warming station will be a hub where students can come if they miss breakfast or if they need hot chocolate to warm them up. Additionally, the warming station will have coats, gloves, hats, etc., for students who do not have them.

This project will be staff-run so that students do not have to worry about feeling ashamed to come in. We want to eliminate any chance for our students to feel shame about their circumstances. Providing them with this warming station is also a chance for us to talk to our students and get to know their circumstances. The warming station will be a hub for students to connect with staff and receive information about school and community resources to help them through the harsh winter months.
