My Students

I think it's safe to say that we begin reading about things that we enjoy. The challenge that my class of incredible 9th graders faces, is that they have outgrown the typical entry level children's books, but need access to engaging material as they begin their quest toward literacy.

We are a class of "freshmen" in a Career and Occupational Training High School, or an OTC, in New York.

Yes, it is a public school. My students have a variety of disabilities and a broad range of ability levels which have allowed them to be placed in a more restrictive learning environment at the OTC. Unfortunately, I feel that for some of them, this has also meant that they have not been given the opportunities to achieve what I know they are capable of - literacy. As we begin the new year, it has become very clear that my students are drawn to the library in our room. They love the pictures and ask me if they can borrow the books, so I have established a library card system and the kids can take the books home at night. Their enthusiasm is wonderful, but they cannot tell me the title of the books they borrow. I am coming to realize that I need to give them access to books that are age-appropriate, but from which we can begin with reading foundations.

My Project

The books that I am requesting are resources that build upon the interests that I have become aware of in our class. My students are drawn to graphic novels and how-to art books. They are excited and frustrated by mythology and folklore. The books that I have chosen represent a variety of lower level reading materials that will capture the interests they have expressed in class, and encourage them to make progress. The books also contain a variety of literary style, including poetry, fiction, non-fiction, reference materials, vocational, national geographic atlases, graphic novels, and children's books with humor that is flexible across age ranges. It is my hope to make this material an essential part of the year's curriculum, by incorporating daily reading responses, small group reading activities, and of course, by encouraging students to read on their own time.

My kids and I thank you in advance, as we look forward to what this year will bring.

There are so many things that we are planning, but this first step into literacy will be the foundation for everything we pursue. It is my pleasure to be teaching such a fine group of kids, and I hope to have the opportunity to implement this project. We can't wait to send out the Thank You cards for this one! Take care, and good luck to all!
