Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Join a Proud Minority- Read Books! Do you remember the joy you felt reading an amazing book as a kid, or having your parent read to you before bed. Unfortunately, my students don't have those memories or feelings. They are very reluctant readers. But they do all love one thing- technology.

My students live in a low income area.

Many have parents who are first or second generation Americans. Reading is something most of my students approach with trepidation. Their engagement is limited. However, they are open to new experiences and want to perform well. My greatest success in the classroom comes when I can combine reading and writing with technology. If I can combine their love of technology with reading, I feel I can reach even my most struggling, reluctant readers. My students need a Kindle Fire and a screen protector.

My Project

As a lover of reading, I was firmly anti-ebook for years. It wasn't until I finally tried the Kindle Fire that I realized the amazing opportunities an ereader could open up for me. I bring my kindle fire to school every day and the students fight over who will get to read a book from my kindle that day. The touch screen interface, the easy to navigate menus, and the ease at which they can browse a seemingly endless display of books draws them in. Having ereaders in my classroom will open up so many more reading possibilities for my students. In addition, the dictionary features built in to the kindle will help so many of my struggling readers tackle books which previously would have been too much work for them to even attempt to read.

My goal is to foster a love of reading in my students.

I want them to see how a book can become something that they can always have at their finger tips, especially now that ereaders make them so accessible. Please help expand our classroom library and bring it into the 21st century!
