My Students

Was science horrible for you in school? Unfortunately, many of my students feel this way. By having some fun and simple science equipment in the room for them to view, I am hoping to inspire my students. Excitement about any available equipment will help them gain an interest in science.

The kids I teach are from a low income area that services many English Language Learners.

They are often on their own when it comes to their studies. Finding ways to inspire them isn't always easy. Simple visual devices come in very handy! Anything they can see becomes real for them. The more real things are, the more they will want to learn about them.

My Project

The items I am requesting include holders for microscope slides (that I plan on having the students create), some interesting slides that they can use with a microscope, and a plasma globe to help the students better understand electrons. I am trying to get simple equipment that I can leave out for the students to observe either on their own or with the aid of a microscope. I try to have something on my desk for them to look at each day when they come in. The more options I have, the more inspired they can be.

Science is traditionally a subject that students seem to lose interest in early on.

I am trying to excite my students with special objects they do not have at home or may not see anywhere outside of our classroom. The more interesting the object, the more interested they will be. Their questioning is the key to focusing them on the more difficult concepts they are expected to know.
