Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This is the first time in a long time that I have seen REAL passion and excitement in my Reading Lab students about a book. No, "what? look at how long it is!" Several have finished reading Hunger Games ahead of the group. EVERYONE wants to continue on to book 2 and eventually 3.

I work primarily with, remedial students grades 6-8 to improve their overall reading skills.

We have been on the NY State SUR (School Under Review) list. Despite the fact that my students come from a low income, disadvantaged neighborhood, they have a great deal of potential. After years of struggling and striving to raise achievement levels, many lack confidence in themselves and their abilities. In an attempt to combat that AND make learning more interesting, I created several "Book" Groups this year to supplement our skills classes. Upon the recommendation of a former student, we decided to read The Hunger Games. Our A.P. made that possible by personally funding our first set of books. I have never seem my kids so engaged and motivated - they are reading on their own at home and our discussions have been seriously thought provoking. Several kids went ahead of the group and have already finished the book, others not in the group are asking to join! My kids are SMILING

My Project

Most of my students do not OWN books. School is their best option for access to good literature and often books being read for class have to be shared because there are not enough to go around. This is the first time literally in YEARS that I have seen kids EXCITED about reading. They are all asking me if we can read the next book in the series and so far I can only say, "maybe" because there is no money in the budget to purchase those books. I can "teach" reading with any book - the skills don't change but the motivation of the students is a HUGE factor in success or failure. My kids are REALLY MOTIVATED right now and I would love t be able to continue to capitalize on that in order to help them learn to LOVE reading and become life-long readers as well as just raise their NY State ELA scores. YOU can help with that by providing a book they actually WANT to read - "Catching Fire".

I Became a reading teacher because I myself struggled with reading for years in school.

Once I became a better reader, books became my temporary escape from a not so pleasant reality; in that respect, the stories and characters probably saved my life. That's where some of my students are. I want to unlock that magic for them. Reading and discussing a good book can help increase a child's self esteem and provide them with hope.
