My Students

My 4th grade students from the diverse neighborhood of Greenpoint, the most northern part of Brooklyn in New York City, would love nothing more than to experience the everyday joys of learning together as we return to school this year. They are an industrious bunch - two groups of about 20 - learning how to enhance their critical-thinking skills this year. Especially in our curriculum, we learn of the pride and contributions of Native American culture, in addition to the discrimination they faced throughout their history after colonization.

Having a calming space for students to reflect on themes of honesty, power, privilege, allyship, nature, conservation, sustainability and more is our goal.

This beautiful, new classroom carpet representing peace and harmony with nature and all living things is just the thing we need. It will also foster their social and emotional learning, as we will hold many rich discussions in this relaxing space.

My Project

Heading into this new school year, my students are excited, yet a little nervous for the challenges that lay in front of them as they transition to in-person learning again. That is why this beautiful “Spirit of Truth” carpet will provide them just the space they’ll need to relax their minds, stretch their bodies, and reflect on the day’s lessons.

With a Medicine Wheel/Dreamcatcher at the center of the carpet encircled by the Seven Teachings, it will become a focal point for discussions of the Native American culture.

The teachings emphasize walking the earth peacefully in harmony with nature and all living things.

Social-emotional learning is more important than ever. Combine that with diverse teachings and read-alouds in a super, comfortable spot, and it’s a win-win for our classroom!
