Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I currently teach in a middle school, grades 6-8. I teach issues, choices, and life skills; which are subjects our student direly need. Our school is a high needs school that is located in the middle of a housing project. The demography of our school is as following:Of our 320 students enrolled, 19% are English Learners, 18% are in Special Education, 79% are in the Economically Disadvantaged Youth Program, and 68% qualify for free or reduced fee lunch. These circumstances can sometimes lead to very difficult days for the teachers as well as the students.

Many of our children live in extreme poverty. They are surrounded by death, violence, drugs, and many horrible things that no one, especially children should have to live with. Many times our students come to school with so much stress and baggage, that we as educators have to find ways to remove all the layers and baggage before the learning process can begin. Through The Picture Art Project, My hopes is to create a new and exciting outlet for our students in order to help relieve the stress and peel away at those layers that he or she bring to school everyday.

I am asking for the the cameras and the photo printer equipment because, I want to give the students an opportunity to view the world in a different way. I want them to begin to appreciate and notice that there is beauty all around them and within them. having access to this equipment will also allow for them to learn how to make choices, decisions, and to trust what they are feeling inside. I am hoping that the Picture Art Program will be a student choice project. I am hoping to get the ball rolling by taking students out into the familiar surroundings of the school; to allow them the opportunity to capture images of themselves and surrounding areas. My hope is that these excursions will give the students the confidence to explore and make choices about what images they would like to capture. The students will also begin to build portfolios of their work that will be displayed as inspiration to others. Their work can also be utilized in other projects happening around the school, such as: Year Book, and the Parent News Letter. Most importantly, the confidence gained through this project will spill over into the classroom.

With your kind contributions you will be making a difference in a child's life by enabling the child to remove the baggage and stress caused by their circumstances, by allowing them to be creative and seeing the world in a new light. Also, your help will give our students the opportunity to try something new, achieve something new, and succeed at something new; giving our children the confidence to move forward and try more new things.
