My Students

My kindergarteners begin their learning adventures in the center of a large, urban district. Our school is a Title I-funded school with approximately seven hundred students in grades K-5. The student body has a large number of English Learners. Nearly two-thirds of our students are minorities and all receive free lunch. Within this challenge is strength and determination, as our school strives to close the achievement gap while growing confident and successful learners.

Kindergarten sets the foundation for a lifetime of inquiry and a love for learning.

These young scholars are at an age when everything is still new and exciting and their quest to know "how" and "why" makes each day a joy to experience. I strive to provide them with experiences that will not only ignite a passion to wonder and question, but will also give them the skills to find the answers they seek.

My Project

My kindergarteners are only in their first year of school, but the effects of the last year and a half are still evident. Many are entering school without the readiness or social skills from preschool or available adults, and are deeply affected by the stressors of disrupted lives and overwhelmed families. The materials I've selected will help fill these gaps, while moving my scholars forward in meeting content standards.

Phonics, and early reading and writing skills are vital for future literacy success. The materials that will build these skill gaps while also engaging my young, inexperienced learners are the following: letter writing center (RF.K.1D, L.K.1A), Snap and Build Phonics/Stack and Build Phonics/Build A Word Magnet Board/Match and Sort Phonics/CVC cubes (RF.K.2D, RF.K.3A), and Sentence Building cards (L.K.1F). The Number Line Activity chart (OA.K.A5/CC.K.A2/ CC.K.B4) will build the number recognition and math foundation for future success.

The pandemic has also limited my scholars' social and emotional development, which I want to address through oral language and a focus on self and others. The book What I Like About Me, as well as the Social Emotional Storytelling Kit with related books (SL.K.6), will aid my students in addressing their emotions and experiences in a healthy way. The Blocks and Blueprints and STEM materials (K.G.B4/K-ESS3-1) will meet math and science standards as well as interpersonal skills through collaboration and problem solving.
