This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The summer slump is very real for most children. Being away from school for so long, a lot of students forget some of the skills they learned throughout the previous school year. This makes it harder for them to reach grade-level goals when they start the next school year. It also doesn't help that most of the students in our school come from lower income households that might not have the accessibility to buy their children books to read. Or, their parents work during the day and cannot take them to the library to borrow books.

We've worked so hard this year to help build each child into a better reader; I want to make sure they maintain as much of this growth as possible when they transition to third grade.

I've chosen books that are at three different reading levels to help encourage all my students to read over summer break. I'm trying to get them their own summer goodie bag. Each child would get a tote bag with three different books and a reusable water bottle. Sometimes when they are gifted items, they are more likely to want to use them. I'm hoping by gifting them these books, they'll catch the summer reading bug and continue to grow their love of reading throughout the summer, into third grade, and beyond!
