My Project

I am an early childhood special education inclusion teacher in a Pre-Kindergarten classroom at an elementary school. My students with disabilities are fully included into the general education classroom and curriculum.

In our current financial crisis teachers have to think of ways to provide equal access to curriculum with little or no budget.

It can be a challenge to find ways across developmental areas like gross motor, to accommodate children with special needs without spending some money on adaptive equipment.

Children with physical disabilities and students with delays in motor development deserve to have an instructional setting with supports to access curriculum. As an early childhood educator, our students are learning all day long through play, and that includes outdoor play, like learning to ride and maneuver a tricycle around the path. My role is to meet the challenge to provide other ways for students with disabilities to be included in the activities and routines with their typically developing peers.

I am writing this project for the taxi tricycle since some of our students are not able to motor a standard tricycle. I am always looking for equipment that will allow all students to access our outdoor playground alongside their typical peers. Then I saw the TRICYCLE TAXI and thought how fun for students to be able to take a ride on the bike path, as their typical peers do each day...the only difference is they would be enjoying the ride as a passenger. There are so many social and school readiness opportunities that occur on the playground within this one activity. If the children can ride with a peer, their inability to motor the tricycle won't impact their access to this very fun Pre-K activity.
