Catapult Creations: Engineering on the Fly

Help me give my students supplies to design, build, and test their end of the year STEM project: catapults!

My Project

Every year, as we near the end of the school year, my students and I are wearing down and winding up for our summer fun! This mix can bring new challenges to the classroom so I like to shake things up with a fun 2-week engineering and design project to bring us down the home stretch.

For 8th grade this year, I am planning to have students design, build, and test catapults!

Their catapults will have to be designed within a set of parameters and be able to launch a ping pong ball and a golf ball certain distances. Students will then analyze their test data and present their findings. Catapults and conclusion posters will be on display in the school library the last week of school.

Unfortunately, supplies are running low in order to ensure all students are able to bring their catapult creation to life. Students will use the popsicle sticks, tongue depressors, and dowel rods to create the frame while using items like the fishing line or cording to create tension in their design. The paper cups will be used most likely as the holder for launch materials. Overall this project will be a fun way to keep students engaged and put our engineering and design skills to the test!
