My Project

Financial literacy is a critical life skill, and I am committed to teaching my math students about the importance of financial education. I teach in a small, rural school and many of my middle school students cannot identify coins or count money. The Learning Journey: Kids Bank Play Money Sets will allow students to see the difference between denominations of coins and bills.

This project aims to introduce my 6th-8th graders to the concepts of budgeting, saving money and responsible spending using an interactive approach.

I want to bring the world of finance to my classroom by using play money and the financial literacy activities found in the workbooks on my list. The student white boards and markers will allow students to practice skills without needing to use an excessive amount of paper.

Due to our rural location, many of my students do not have access to large shopping districts where they may need to compare prices in order to choose the best deal. They do not understand the importance of budgeting because we only have one grocery store. This project will provide my students with the various skills needed to create budgets, allocate funds for different expenses and make informed spending choices.
