My Students

My students are fantastic! I work in L., MA in a classroom in which the students have unique needs that at times require significant amounts of adult support.

My students come in every day wanting to work to their full potential.

We work in small groups and provide support not only on academics but also their social skills. One way to improve their social skills is through real-life experiences. In order to go out in the community, we run a school store that allows us to raise money to go to community outings!

My Project

Our students are practicing both their math and social skills by running a school store where we sell food and drinks! We sell snacks after school in order to make money for the students to use towards field trips that they earn each month for good behavior! An example of one of our field trips that the money is used for is in December. We will be going to our local theater to see A Christmas Carol followed by lunch at a local restaurant. Trips like these would not be possible without the money we raise selling snacks after school.

Our students will practice the math skills they are taught on a daily basis by figuring out the total amount of a sale and making change!

Although these skills may seem simple to most, they are often skills that we take for granted. These are important skills that our students will need in the real world, particularly once they get a job and need to keep track of their own money. The experience of selling will also assist students in building their confidence level when it comes to interacting appropriately with both peers and adults. They will practice using manners as well as speaking skills that they can hopefully one day use when they are employed or even at a job interview.
