My Students

The perception is that because we live in a rural area our students know all about agriculture. But, the truth is that many of our children live in apartments, spend their free time in a neighboring city that is large enough to have a theater and a mall. In other words, they are typical teenagers.

My students are extremely proud, this year our football team is in the 4th round of the playoffs and we are hoping for a state championship.

My students are willing to work hard and they have ambitious goals and dreams. But our community, like most others in the country, has been hard hit by the current economic crisis. I have students who come to school in order to get two good meals. Our demographics are approximately 40% minority and 62% who are eligible for free or reduced lunches. This project is important to me because I want to ensure that my students know how to raise, harvest and prepare their own food. Best case scenario this can become a productive hobby. The worst case scenario is that financial circumstances make it a necessity.

My Project

I'm asking for Earthbox curriculum materials and Earthbox Kits to help with teaching Biology and Anatomy and Physiology Classes. People today have so little understanding about the types of foods that they should be eating, and even less understanding about where these foods come from. Part of the project that I am proposing for my classes involves teaching my students about good nutrition and to break the myth that vitamins only come in bottles.

I am afraid that our children are growing further and further away from the ability to make sensible choices about the food they eat and the impact that it has on their health.

Obesity among teenagers has been called an epidemic. I want to do everything that I can to empower my students so that they can make educated decisions about their diets. Please help me make this project happen. Poverty and poor choices often go together. I want to break that chain in my community.
