This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Studies show, bringing students together in a whole group builds community and create more relationships among teachers and students.

My students are a colorful group of kids with lots of personality!

In a classroom with 16 boys and five girls, we are very active in our lessons that spark lots of curiosity! Some of these students come from broken homes with parents in jail, adopted by grandparents because parents were teenagers, or one of several siblings. They are very eager to learn, but also value feeling safe, respected, and appreciated. Many come to school relying on the stability of smiling faces, meals, and positive/safe environments.

My Project

Carpet time is an integral part of an elementary classroom. It is where questions develop, interests ignite curiosity, powerful discussions motivate, tears fall, smiles brighten, and classroom respect and community form. Every whole group lesson is taught on the carpet several times a day.

When students feel safe and a part of a supportive community, they are more willing to take risks while learning.

Receiving new information, sharing questions, and finding solutions as a whole group assists the students to internalize concepts and learn from their peers and teacher. Having a large carpet that fits all students will continue the growth of our classroom community.
