My Students

Our students are compassionate, curious, courageous, and character-driven. These creative innovators hail from all parts and neighborhoods within the city of Chicago. As a school community, we try to give our students access to educational opportunities that their families may not be able to provide. Our students are diverse - ethnically, racially, and economically. Thus, as a public school, we see our mission as preparing our students to have a global mindset oriented for altering paradigms.

The students push themselves to engage with the world and be leaders for their generation.

My Project

Our school's Latin students have been studying the language, culture, religion, and government of the Ancient Romans for the past four years and traveling to Rome and Pompeii is the culmination of their high school Latin careers.

Rome is the birthplace of nearly every author that the Latin students have read in Honors Latin III and Honors Latin IV.

The goals of the curriculum are to not only understand the Latin language and the grammar/syntax/lexicon of the language but also to understand the products and practices that the Ancient Romans have passed on and are still living in the Eternal City of Rome. Their legacy is far from dead-it is alive in the Latin inscriptions on buildings, the ruins of the Forum Romanum, the sewer covers that still have the SPQR branded on them, and the Colosseum where one can still feel the shouts and excitement of the gladiatorial battles that took place at the height of the Roman empire. The students would never be able to truly appreciate the Latin language and culture unless they step foot in Rome. This is the last place where Latin was actually used and spoken by the citizens of the Empire.

This trip connects to our school's Latin curriculum in a variety of ways. Students have been studying the practices and products of the Ancient Romans during the Republic and Empire for four years. The immensely important culture products from Ancient Rome include monuments and historical sites that they will be able to visit on the trip. The sights that students will visit are the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, the Trevi Fountain, the Circus Maximus, and even the Theater of Pompey, the place where the infamous Julius Caesar.
