My Students

Carpe Diem - Seize the Day! This is just one of the inspirational quotes my students are translating in Latin class. Students are discussing the wisdom of the Romans, especially Horace's, who coined the phrase "carpe diem" and encouraged his readers to never take tomorrow for granted.

My students are Latin scholars, from 9th grade Latin 1 students to 12th grade Latin Poetry Honors students.

They are among the best and the brightest of an urban public school system. Certain aspects of learning a language can be tedious, but one way to challenge and excite them is by empowering students through art. My students shine when given ways and opportunities to express themselves and show their creativity. Unfortunately we don't have access to cameras of the most up to date technology to create the photographs "which will be the most effective for our purpose.

My Project

Getting this camera in the hands of my students will allow them to express themselves and the Latin they are translating. Different levels of Latin students are naturally at different levels of ability. However, I hope that all of my students will have access to this camera to take high resolution photos. In order to use this camera, they will have to borrow it from the classroom. Our city and the students' neighborhoods will offer them the subjects of their photos. In order to safely bring the camera to and from school, they will need a case. A memory card will also be necessary to store the photos until they can be uploaded to a school computer. With this project students will learn how to express themselves and the wisdom of the Romans through photography. They will learn responsibility caring for this camera while in their charge.

Students will surely learn how to "carpe diem" and take that photograph which will inspire others just as the Romans inspire us to this day with their poetry and philosophy.

I hope that my Latin students create art with this camera to be seen and admired by the school community and visitors for years to come.
