My Students

This past winter, our town had a rare snow day. It doesn't usually happen and when it does, it doesn't last long. I was able to capture the day with my digital camera and show my students what it was like to save and share those images. I want to teach them that they can do it too.

Our school has a very high poverty rate with a transient student body.

Many of the students that I teach attend three or more elementary schools in one school year. Their parents have to be able move at a moments notice so they do not have very many possessions. One of the many challenges facing my students is that they do not have access to technology. They do not have computers at home and some have never used a camera before. Owning a camera for their personal use is unheard of in their homes. My school has a 33% Hispanic,33% White and 33% Black population. We also have a magnet school, single gender and self-contained classrooms. To say that we are diverse is an understatement. I am responsible for teaching art to all of these children. I have already started an e-portfolio for each of my students so that I can document their artistic progress while they are at my school. My hope would be that they learn how to upload their own images.

My Project

My students are so eager to learn something new. I teach them all about art through power points and CDs. They learn about art through the ages as well as contemporary art. I bring in photographs that I take on vacations and the children are fascinated by the fact that I can put my pictures into a power point. I know that many of my students will never be able to travel the world so I try to bring the world of art to them. But I want to be able to show them the beauty in the world that they call home. With these digital cameras, I will be able to take my classes outside to find the elements of art all around us. We can look for lines in the grass and curving roads around our school. We can see the changing colors of the seasons in the trees. We can look for man-made shapes as well as shapes in nature just by walking around with our cameras and taking snapshots. We then would be able to come into our computer lab and create photo collages for the children to share with their families.

Technology is the key to our future and we are very fortunate at our school to have many computers for our students to use.

However, we only have two digital cameras to share with 620 students. If I am awarded this grant, I will be able to teach elementary photography to all of my students. Can you imagine the possibilities if I am able to start working with a child when he is in kindergarten and can continue to work with him through fifth grade?
