Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
My 7th grade students come from a wide array of backgrounds. Most of the families are from Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. This is the first time that these students have had science class as a stand-alone, and the subject has often taken second fiddle to math or social studies.
The current 7th grade class has many shining stars, and I am looking for new ways to challenge them.
They still struggle with meeting state guidelines, but are above average for the neighborhood. These kids are eager to learn, ambitious, and always seeking new ways to grab information.
My Project
When I was in middle school, I fell in love with science through fascinating plants. I made weekly observations about the conditions of the habitat, health and growth of the plant, and their diets. I would love to set up observation stations that help my students make deeper observations.
These plants are the same ones that lead Charles Darwin across the globe, and I hope they fuel curiosity in my students as well!
Speaking about my favorite genus, sundews (Drosera) Darwin said "I care more about Drosera than the origin of all the species." "I am frightened and astounded at my results ... Is it not curious that a plant should be far more sensitive to a touch than any nerve in the human body!"
Thanks for considering helping my students gain access to these marvelous plants and a suitable habitat.
