This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My first graders always walk in with a smile on their faces ready to learn. They always strive for academic readiness no matter what the situation is.

This pandemic with COVID and the Winter Storm that hit Texas this weekend has caused an enormous amount of social emotional stress on my students and parents.

My students come from a very low socio-economic area, with very little resources to engage them in learning. The students that make up my classroom are 99% low income and at risk for dropping out before finishing high-school.

I want to build a stress free foundation in my classroom, so when they leave my classroom they are motivated and excited about learning. I want them to carry the passion of learning with them forever. Your support and generosity is greatly appreciated.

My Project

Many were already struggling to keep up in class because their social and emotional needs and now that this winter storm hit many of my students lost their electricity and water for days. I would love to provide a safe place for my students to meditate in class by providing them with their own sofa seats for them to do meditation and release their anxiety with their stress balls. Meditation can help my students read and respond to internal signals of stress before their developing brains and bodies give in to a full blown tantrum. All of the Pete the Cat books will allow me to teach a lesson about kindness and how we should treat people with respect. Each child would take their personal book and socks home after the lesson is being taught. I want them to cherish this important lesson. I will be able utilizing these social and emotional books throughout my lessons during my "SEL circle time". Each Monday and Friday we will discuss a different topic accordingly to the book of the day. I would love to provide them with healthy snack choice throughout our sessions. Emotions and feelings are an extremely strong trigger for food choices. From a young age food becomes connected to a variety of emotions and social interactions. Whether sad, happy, celebrating, commemorating, lonely, angry etc food is often used to support or cope with these emotions and circumstances. The most important thing is to make sure my students needs are being met so they can be successful in life.
