Caribbean Poetry Extravaganza!

Help me give my students the life-changing experience of meeting a Caribbean-American poet over Zoom and creating a poetry art collage.

My Project

Who is an author? Who is a poet? Let's start a virtual author series at our library and welcome performing slam poets to our school! Our Charter School is a Title 1 school serving the world's most diverse population in Queens, NY, and students who speak more than 36 languages. Poet Ms. Thornhill has visited my former schools and shown how powerful she can be.

It's essential for students to meet authors from diverse backgrounds who reflect their life experiences.

Students will study the author's beautiful work and then create their own poetry and art collages. Children need to see role models of authors and poets from their cultures. So we will start a Zoom author series to welcome visitors!

Poet Samantha Thornhill is a poet and author from Trinidad and Tobago.

The author of the "Confetti Kids" series, Ms. Thornhill has written books such as: "The Talent Show," and "The Special Goodbye." Ms. Thornhill writes children's books, and is also a dramatic slam poet who offers shows to public school students and music students at Julliard.

As a new immigrant, Ms. Thornhill came to the United States at age 10. When she started school in Florida, some of her classmates had trouble understanding her Caribbean accent and made her feel "other." She changed her speech to fit in -- but, as she demonstrates for students during her poetry performance, she still has a musical accent from her homeland that she can bring out with pride. As she moves between her more Americanized English and her Caribbean lilt, Ms. Thornhill demonstrates her biculturalism and blend of diverse influences and the rich layers of her story and identity.
