Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 4th graders are creative, enthusiastic learners, and they love to think outside of the box! Instead of wrapping up our geography unit with a test, for example, we created 3D maps of our beloved state, painted, labeled, and added unique and personal touches that illustrated all we'd learned about maps, land forms, and Texas regions. We concluded our poetry unit by hosting a "poetry cafe," complete with "coffee" (hot cocoa) and rich literature read out loud by our student writers.
My Project
Week 1 of virtual teaching down and I am trying, as much as possible, to give my readers and writers a break from their computer screens. We are working towards this goal by writing in journals and creating paper graphic organizers...and soon, I hope to ship home books for the kids to read.
I'd like to make care packages to send to my 47 students, filled with books and treats (crayons and fidget toys).
I know having a copy of our class read aloud in their hands (and the knowledge that their teacher lovingly put these items together just for them!) will be gratifying and provide a connection that we're lacking during online teaching.
I'm also requesting access to virtual reading and writing units from Teacher's College. I will view these modeled lessons for my own professional development and to supplement my literacy instruction.
