Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My art and design students have been learning how art and design can make a difference in the world and their communities, and this project has a real life connection to their experience, after having undergone one of the most devastating fires that has uprooted many of them and broken down their sense of safety and wellbeing. The Eaton Fire has destroyed many of my students' homes and displaced more than two-thirds of the students in our district, so it is imperative that students have an outlet for healing and reducing their trauma.

To show the power of art and design, this project will demonstrate to students how they can use their creative energy and put their talents and skills to powerful use, by designing care packages for Eaton wildfire survivors, many of them fellow classmates, teachers, staff, and community stakeholders at our school.

To that end, we will be designing Altadena Strong tote bags, pillows, and hats to include in care packages for wildfire survivors, and students will be creating the artwork and logos using their knowledge and skills of the design process, which we have been learning about since the start of the school year. Students will also make handmade cards, write letters of support, and hand sew plushies for younger victims, as students learned how to make plush toys earlier in the semester. We will tailor each care package to the unique needs and interests of each recipient and design special items to go in each package. We want to turn a tragic event into something beautiful, positive, hopeful, and inspiring for our students, showing them how when we help each other as a community, using art and design as a tool for positive change, we will all make it through together.
