This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Downtown Long Beach is such a diverse and changing community. My school happens to be right in the heart of it. I work with 12 to 14-year-olds and teach English Language Arts. Our school has the largest English language learner population of any school in our school district. Most of my classes have more than 50% English language learners. We are also a Title I school, meaning most of our students come from low-income families. My school supports student needs in so many ways that go beyond learning.

I believe we must ensure students are fed, safe, and clean before any learning can begin.

My Project

I want to create a Care Cart for students in my classroom where they know they can come to get basic hygiene supplies.

From toothbrushes to tampons, I want to make sure my students have what they need.

Having access to personal hygiene supplies is an obstacle for many of my students. Our school does its best to get these resources to those that need them, but some students don't know where to go or feel uncomfortable asking. I know having these materials in my classroom could get the right help to the right students faster and in a safe space without embarrassment.
